Geography

Camiguin Island is a pear-shaped volcanic island resting along the northern tip of Mindanao. It is approximately 90 kilometers north of Cagayan de Oro, and is bounded by four bodies of water: Bohol Sea to the north, Macajalar Bay to the west, Gingoog Bay to the southeast, and Butuan Bay to the east. It is the smallest province in northern Mindanao, with a land area of only 29,187 hectares, and is composed of five towns: Mambajao (the capital), Mahinog, Guinsiliban, Sagay, and Catarman. Being an island with volcanic origins, it even plays host to seven volcanoes, including the still-active Mt. Hibok-Hibok. Aside from being small in land area, the province is the second smallest province in the Philippines in terms of population with only 72, 232 persons inhabiting the island.

But being small doesn’t stop Camiguin from being the wonderful destination that it is. It has lush forests, volcanoes, eternal hot and cold springs, pristine patches of black and white beaches, majestic waterfalls, exotic marine life, blue-ridge mountains, and serene surroundings. Its idyllic lifestyle and jovial people coupled with its glorious past make Camiguin a destination really worth visiting.

Culture and Dialects

The Camiguin culture is a mixture of both Boholano and Cebuano culture. It is very colorful and creative. The people are deeply religious, hospitable and friendly. Cebuano is the major dialect in the Province. However, in the towns of Sagay and Guinsiliban, where most of the indigenous tribes reside, the Kinamiguin dialect is still spoken. Kinamiguin is derived from the Manobo dialect with some mixture of Boholano.

Best Times to Go

Camiguin generally has good weather with seasonal rain showers enhancing its fresh green environment. Fine weather is guaranteed from February to May, while the coolest is from November to January. Maximum rainfall had been recorded on the months of June to December.

Camiguin Countryside Tour

Here in the “Island Born of Fire”, natural wonders and historic riches wait the adventure tourist. Visit the following destinations:

Old Vulcan and Walkway

About 8 kilometers west of the resort. It has 70-80 meters drop off to the sea and a landmark of the “Panaad Festival”. Life-size images depicting the Stations of the Cross placed along the walkway carved by the side of Old Vulcan.

Sunken Cemetery

The old cemetery by the shore of Bonbon collapsed and sunk
under water during the 1871 volcano eruption. The area used to
have a cross marker and is now teeming with corals and marine life.

Old Gui-ob Church Ruins

Some 12 kilometers from the resort in Barangay Bonbon, Catarman. One can see the old belfry, convent and church walls and remnants of the 1871 Vulcan Daan eruption.

Soda Water Swimming Pool

The one and only in the country where you can swim to a pool of soda water. Picnic huts and tables are available beside the pool.

Sto Niño Cold Spring

Located in Catarman, some 25 kilometers from the resort. A terrific huge pool of cold spring water measuring 25m by 40m sprouting from the sandy bottom.

J & A Fishpen

A large fish pen near Benoni port where you can fish and select fresh sea foods and have it cooked in their restaurant.

Philvolcs Observatory Station

Set on top of the Payahan hills the observatory has great views over the Island. One can find seismograph that monitors the activity of Mt. Hibok-hibok volcano and other volcanoes of the island.

Ardent Hot Spring

In the heart of the island bubbles this mineral pool with water around 40 degrees Celsius. Mist rises from the heated waters that run down the vents in the active Hibok-hibok volcano.

White Island

A 10 minutes boat ride from the resort. An inhabited white sand bar with the picturesque Mt. Hibok-hibok and Old Vulcan as its backdrop. The picturesque island is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling and viewing the sunrise and sunset over Camiguin.

Mantigue Island tour

The island is 4 hectares of evergreen forest fringed with white sandy
beaches. A fishing village is found in the north side of the island. One side
of the island is a white sand beach with coral offshore, while opposite side
provides a deep drop-off for snorkeling and diving.

Mt. Hibok- Hibok Volcano Trek

Mt. Hibok-Hibok approach is through the base of Barangay Tagdo in Mambajao. It is the only active among the 6 others on the Island. The 1,250 meters slope is a challenge to climbers as the trek entails skillful maneuvers in loose rocks and boulders. There is a crater like lake and steam outlets on top of the peak.

Katibawasan Falls Trip (trekking, canyoning, rappelling, and climbing)

First you go trekking to the top of the first pool of Katibawasan Falls (approximately a one hour trek), then you go rappelling, jumping, and sliding down different canyons. On this trip you will see the beautiful nature of Camiguin and enjoy the excitement of rappelling down the small waterfalls. After all the fun, a barbecue will be ready by the falls. A brief lesson on roping will be given before the start of the trip.

Cagayan de Oro Whitewater Rafting and Adventures

Experience an adventure in the natural, wild, and rugged countryside. Shoot the rapids and wrestle the waves and whirlpools down the Cagayan de Oro River.

Also Drop by the Gardens of the Malasag Eco-Tourism Village with its replicas of the region’s tribal homes, endemic plants and trees, and a panoramic view of Macajalar Bay.

Gamefishing Expedition

Gamefishing here is best from December to August. Camiguin Island is blessed with the availability of local big gamefishing opportunities. Giant trevally (Mamsa), barracuda, and wahoo (tanigue) are found year round. Sailfish can be spotted from March to June and tuna from July to October.

Scuba Diving Courses and Packages

Marine life is very diverse in the dive sites of Camiguin Island. Lava formations, coral gardens, drop-off reefs, steep slopes, walls, sunken sand bars, rare macro critters, schools of fish, pelagic fishes, and shells abound each site.
