Verde Island lies between Mindoro Island and the main island of Luzon. The actual passage way is called Verde Island Passage. Verde Island is part of Batangas Province.

For scuba divers access to the beautiful waters of Verde Island is best from either Puerto Galera or Anilao on Luzon. Verde Island diving is about a 45 minute to 1 hour banca trip from either place.

Where to dive.

Verde Island Diving

The two standout dives on Verde Island Philippines are the Pinnacle and Washing Machine. Both these dives are extremely different.

Pinnacle: This dive is also known as the Drop Off. A huge underwater reef that comes to the surface on the eastern side of Verde Island, the pinnacle is like a column that that starts in about 60m of water a rises, narrowing as it gets to the surface.

You have to watch the conditions here as the currents are ferocious with some down current. Your banca will drop you real close to the pinnacle in the lee of the current. The idea is to get as close to the pinnacle as possible and then descend to your agreed depth (with Dive master). The dive will then zig zag up the pinnacle exploring the fantastic corals and marine life that inhabit the pinnacle. If you look out onto the blue you can be rewarded with schools of pelagic fish which is always a bonus. With the current running fast you cannot circumnavigate the pinnacle as you will just get wash away with the current.

Take your time exploring the reef, there are some really healthy gorgonian fans and on occasion you can site sea snakes sleeping amongst the coral. This is a world class dive with brilliant visibility, if you diving in Puerto Galera make sure you request a day trip to Verde Island diving.

Washing Machine: Now the first thing you must know about the Washing Machine is that there are two ways of diving the location. The first is in slack water and the other is during the ebb tide where the current turns the location into the Washing Machine.

The site is a number of small canyons and swim through’s which do not get much deeper than 15m, the canyons are all interlocking. It is imperative that you have a good guide for this dive during the current. As the current runs through these passages and canyons the water rushes in from all directions and then due to the directions of the passages, the current runs into itself creating a washing machine effect. One second you are being pulled one direction the next the other, quite exhilarating and not for the inexperienced who would not enjoy this dive at all.

Tubbataha Reef, Sulu Sea consists of awesome reefs in pristine conditions, only accessible by live aboard.

Tubbataha is a reef ecosystem made up of two atolls located in the middle of the Sulu Sea. It is a sanctuary for marine life. The reefs lie on the Cagayan Ridge, a line of extinct underwater volcanoes which starts from the north at the Sultana Shoal and ends in the south at the San Miguel Islands. It is located 92 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and 80 nautical miles southwest of Cagayancillo, the municipality that exercises political jurisdiction over it. It was proclaimed as a National Marine Park on August 11, 1988 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1993, in recognition of its outstanding universal value in terms of marine life species diversity and richness. The national park covers some 33,200 hectares and lies in the middle of the Sulu Sea, it is located about 150 kilometers by boat from Puerto Princessa. The reefs themselves cover an area of around 10,000 hectares.

This actually covers the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Studies and research shows that it contains more than 30% of the world’s coral reefs. Data that was gathered from different research shows that the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas have over 450 species of corals. According to the marine biologists who visited and studied the area, it is the center for genetic richness and the diversity of sea grass with 16 known species. Also, found are the some 400 species of marine algae, 6 species of marine turtles and 222 species of marine mammals, most of which are already endangered.

Where to dive.

Tubbataha North and South: The two coral atolls (North and South), is separated by a channel eight kilometers wide. The larger north reef, about 16km long and 4.5 km wide, is popularly known as Bird Island due to the numerous “Boobies” that nest on the Islet and South reef, about 5km long and 3km wide is known as the Lighthouse. Everything about this park is large, from leopard sharks, shovel-nosed sharks, manta, eagle rays, tuna groupers and large school of fish. The terrain has much to offer, from gentle slopes to steep walls. Coral cover is vast and large, giant sea fans, sponges and an impressively wide variety and number of hard and soft coral carpets this large reef.

Subic Bay, Zambales a number of real good wrecks in the bay which can be safely penetrated. In Subic Bay, wreck diving is at its best!

Subic Bay scuba diving, instantly conjures up images of wrecks, good accessible wrecks. Wreck divers the world over have heard about and in most cases have even dived, these high quality wrecks. Subic Bay scuba diving is one of only two high concentration of wrecks in the Philippines. The other site being off the Coron islands, north of Palawan.

The majority of the wrecks are a result of either the Spanish – US war in 1898 or World War II, where a number of Japanese vessels were sunk by US aircraft.

Subic Bay scuba diving revolves around the wrecks that dot Subic Bay, it is no wonder with Subic Bay being a natural safe harbour for vessels to make repairs and take on stores, the only problem was there is nowhere to hide during an air raid. The bay has a number of highly accessible wrecks, out of a total of more than thirty, in various degrees of decay, the majority of which can be penetrated to some degree.

When to dive.

There are some great dive shops that will take you out to dive these wrecks, with all scuba dives lead by either an instructor or a dive master. The visibility can be fickle at times as you are inside a bay, with some of the wrecks scuttled or bombed in shipping channels. You can scuba dive Subic Bay pretty much all year round as there is always a wreck sheltered from the elements. The time of the year with consistently good weather and good visibility is between January and the beginning of June.

Where to dive.

Subic Bay scuba diving is centered around the wrecks in Subic Bay, so if you come scuba diving in Subic Bay think wrecks. Below is a description of the wrecks you are likely to encounter if you are lucky enough to scuba dive Subic Bay.

El Capitan. The El Capitan is a really good shallow dive and is used as the second dive of the day. It was a freighter of nearly 3,00 tones just under 130 metres long. She crashed in Ilanin Bay where she rests on a sloping bottom, with the deepest point being less than 18 metres and coming to within 5 metre of the surface. As you arrive at the dive site, which is a gorgeous little bay sheltered from most of the elements, you find it hard to believe that such a great wreck lies so close to the shore.

The hull of the El Capitan has seen better days and has collapsed in a number of places. It is now home to an abundant array of marine life and has some good photo opportunities utilizing the natural light squeezing through the holes in the superstructure. Highly recommended dive.

Hellship – Oryoku Maru. Hellships was the name given to unmarked Japanese freighters during World War II. They were used to carry Allied prisoners of war. These hellships, being unidentifiable were targets for the allied forces who frequently bombed and torpedoed them, not knowing that there fellow soldiers were on board as prisoners of war.

The Oryoku Maru was a hellship. On 15th December 1944, she had 1,619 American and British prisoners of war on board when she was sunk, under heavy bombardment by US fighters whilst on its way from Subic Bay to Japan. She was less than half a kilometre off the Alava Pier when attacked, taking 300 prisoners of war to her watery grave.

The actual dive site is only in 18 metres of water. As the Oryoku Maru was sunk in the shipping lanes she crushed by explosives so she was not a threat for other vessels trying to navigate Subic Bay. It is now a mess of iron which has provided many marine organisms a home and has brought the Oryoku Maru to life with the fantastic coral growth and colours.

Seian Maru. During an air raid on Subic Bay, the 3,712 tone freighter, Seian Maru was bombed and sunk. Only 4 days after the bombing of the Oryoku Maru on the 19th December 1944.

She now lies in 28 metres of water and lies on her portside, her starboard side is as shallow as 15 metres. Due to her proximity to the pier and river, visibility can be a bit scratchy, you need to pick the tide right. The wreck has collapsed at amidships, which was probably caused from bombing than anything else. Some nice penetrating swim throughs.

LST (Landing Ship, Tank). This is one of the larger LST that litter the floor of Subic Bay. She was scuttled in 1946 in the middle of Subic Bay between the southern tip of the runway and Grande Island. This LST lies upright in 35 metres of water, visibility on this dive site is generally better than average. The LST is still in relatively good condition.

USS New York / USS Rochester. This would have to be my favourite wreck dive in Subic Bay. She has had three different names during her years of service, with her original name New York the common name she is referred to in her peace. During the first World War she was renamed the Saratoga. She was known as the USS Rochester at the time she was deliberately scuttled in January 1944. At the time she was in dry dock waiting to be scrapped used for spare parts, but the onset of the Japanese march into the Philippines found the USS Rochester scuttled.

The USS New York rests in 28 metres of water and is only half a kilometre off the main pier of Alava and is less than a five minute boat trip. She can be penetrated, swimming up and down the corridors exploring all the nooks and crannies. The visibility can be variable depending on weather conditions and time of year. Lots to see and never enough time to see it all.

Patrol Boat (Japanese). This Japanese vessel was also bombed by US forces in 1944. She now lies in Triboa Bay on the southern side of Subic Bay. She lies in 25 metres of water in an upright position. Marine life is overwhelming with lots of fish life and corals that have taken up residence and providing numerous homes for other marine organisms, getting into the patrol boat is not really worth it as it is tight entry with not a great deal to see.

San Quentin. During the Spanish – US war in 1898 the Spanish scuttled the San Quentin in the hope of blocking the passage, between Grande Island and Chiquita Islands, to the Americans who were relentless in there approach. The San Quentin lies in only 12 metres of water and is often frequented by great visibility being exceptionally close to the entrance to Subic Bay.

Discover the pristine waters and virgin reefs of Sogod Bay, home to a remarkable mix of hard and soft corals teeming with marine life, from pygmy seahorses to giant whalesharks! It offers wonderful scuba diving with spectacular dive sites in one of the Philippines’ most recently discovered dive destinations. The prolific marine life ranges from pygmy seahorses through to whale sharks and there is also an incredible variety of extremely healthy and undamaged hard and soft coral. Indeed, much of the Sogod Bay area is essentially virgin territory and as a result we are still discovering new dive sites. With over 25 excellent dive sites and counting, Sogod Bay in Southern Leyte offers a wealth of discoveries and challenges to the adventurous diver.

One side note is that the area is still being discovered and as a result, facilities are not as well developed as other parts of the Philippines, but they are improving all the time.

Sorsogon is on the southern most tip of Luzon in the Province of Sorsogon, where you can view the magestic Whale Sharks and dive in the Manta Bowl off Ticao island to get a glimpse of huge Manta Rays.

The sheer size of the largest fish in the ocean will start your adrenalin pumping and drive you to such a high, that it will be days before you come back down.

Diving in Sorsogon is all about the Whale Shark Rhincodon Typus or Butanding as it is locally known. It can grow up to 18m length and feeds on the krill and plankton rich currents that flow through the San Bernardino Strait and into the Visayas. The whale shark is not the type of shark most people envisage, the movie Jaws has a lot of explaining to do. It is a placid gentle giant that feeds on the surface, which makes it perfect for viewing in snorkeling equipment.

The best time to view these giants is the beginning of March through to May which is during there peak, they do however start arriving in the months of October and November.

Thankfully rules and regulations have been put in place control tourists man-handling of the whale shark, prior to being given permission to dive with them you undertake a thorough briefing on the correct etiquette. A code of conduct has been produced and you must adhere to them at all times

Off the coast of Bulan in the Ticao Pass is a dive site called Manta Bowl. Here the Manta Rays gather to feed on the rich plankton waters, the same waters that attracted the Whale Sharks. Some of the Manta Rays have a wingspan in excess of 4 metres.

Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro would have to be one of the top dive areas in the Philippines. Big fishes, humongous canyons, caves and wrecks!

Whether you are experienced, novice or want to learn, diving Puerto Galera has all the options you seek.

In Puerto Galera, reef-building corals occur in shallow water, ranging from the surface down to depths between 3 and 40 meters. Not only do they provide home for the many reef fish, but also they are of vital importance of the local population. Reefs protect the coast from typhoons by acting as a wave breaker. In addition, coral reefs in Puerto Galera are a major attraction for divers from all over the world

The 5km foreshore of world-class dive sites are a protected area and marine sanctuary. Visibility varies from 10m to 30m and sometime even better depending on the temperature, current strength and wind direction. Due to the depth and currents in the Verde Island Passage, waters of Puerto Galera are clear and inhabit a vast amount of various forms of marine life. Making Puerto Galera one of the most exiting dive sites in the Philippines and attracting travelers from all continents.

Renowned for its natural beauty and diversity of marine life and environments Puerto Galera was designated a Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO as far back as 1973. More recently Puerto Galera was awarded by UNESCO and received high ranking in the list of most beautiful bays in the world. Puerto Galera offers over 30 unique dive sites for divers of all levels from beginner to experienced and technical divers. Most of the divesites are located near the town of Sabang. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes by boat from White Beach. This easy access coupled with fantastic clear water make for one mind blowing adventure.

When to dive.

The best diving conditions are usually from March to September as water temperature reaches 29°C, the seas are at their calmest and visibility is at its clearest. In December, water temperature can drop to as low as 22°C on the deeper dives due to thermoclines caused by upwelling of clear, cooler water. However, conditions remain good enough for year round diving. Typhoon season is usually from end of July until end of November resulting in winds, rain and choppy seas but there are enough sheltered areas in Puerto Galera accessible to dive.

Where to dive.

A relatively shallow divesite with and huge abundance of fish and both hard and soft corals. The corals in this site have been spared from the coral bleaching event in 1998 that has affected many reefs in many other parts of the world. This is probably due to up-wellings in the Verde Island passage cooling the reef. Photographers can find endless subjects for wide angle and macro photography. A must see!!

This site is well known among underwater photographers. Recommended to all levels.
Maximum Depth : 27 m | Skill Level : Novice & Above

Palawan is paradise, sanctuary to an amazing variety of fauna and flora found nowhere else in the world. It is blessed with incredibly awesome landscapes that astound even the most indifferent of visitors.

Palawan is the country’s biggest province and is composed of 1,768 islands and islets surrounded by a coral shelf with an exceptionally rich marine life. Its steeply sloped mountains are canopied by broad virgin forests.

An anchor tourist destination, it is the perfect playground for the adventurous, especially for scuba divers.

Among the sites for excellent scuba diving are the areas within Puerto Princesa, Dilumacad Island, Matinloc Island, , Miniloc Island, and Coron Bay of El Nido.

When to dive.

Scuba diving here is generally all year round with Palawan being rarely hit by typhoons. However, the best time would be between October and May.

Where to dive

Puerto Princesa

This is the capital of Palawan and in itself offers some good diving as well as being a stop-off point to and from El Nido and Tubbataha Reef. There are well established dive centres here and the area is certainly worthy of some exploration.

Honda Bay

There are several sites around here, the most noteworthy being Helen’s Garden. This is a small, shallow reef and there is a good variety of hard and soft corals. It is a breeding ground for blacktip sharks and juveniles are often seen. You are also likely to encounter sergeant-majors, snapper, wrasse and trevally. It is also a good night dive. Henry’s Reef is closeby and is a shallow dive to 10m. Lionfish, cardinals, snapper, sweetlips and nudibranches are found here. Around Honda Bay you may be lucky enough to spot manta rays and the small Pandan Island is as good a place as any to encounter them. The area also sees juvenile whale sharks, although their exact location is kept a close secret for obvious reasons.

Taytay Bay

About a 5 hour drive north of Puerto Princesa, there are some excellent sites here and dive centres and resorts are numerous. This area is certainly worth a visit.

Port Barton

Again situated about a 5 hour drive north of Puerto Princesa and on the west coast of Palawan, this area is largely undiscovered and offers some rewarding experiences for the intrepid. Shark Rock is furthest away and offers good opportunities to see blacktip and whitetip sharks. Whalesharks have occasionally been spotted here as well. Royalist Shoal can reach depths of 40m, but at 12m the coral is amongst the best in the area. Marine life is plentiful. At Ten Fathoms you may see hammerheads, leopard and nurse sharks. Corals are everywhere and grouper and snapper are regularly seen.

El Nido

South of Coron, on the northwestern coast of Palawan Island is El Nido. The area is dotted with some 2,000 islands and Palawan is regarded as the last nature frontier in the Philippines. It lies in Bascuit Bay which, in 1991, was declared a marine reserve. There are some 54,000 hectares of marine waters.

Diving can be good year round and is very varied with lots of pelagics and excellent wall and drift diving. There are towering limestone cliffs, great beaches and clear waters. The bay is home to dugong, dolphins, turtles and an amazing array of colourful reef fish.

Dilumacad Island

Situated 6 km west of El Nido, this island is best known for a cave dive that can be found on the north side. The entrance is wide enough for two divers to enter together and a 15-20m tunnel leads to a cavern at the centre. The bottom is sandy where small fish and crabs can be seen.

The way out is more narrow and only one diver can exit the 10m tunnel at a time. It will bring you out to a rocky area some 20m from the entrance and you may see larger fish here.

NOTE: this dive should not be attempted when there is a strong north wind.

Miniloc Island

Again situated west of El Nido, the island is home to a luxury resort and there are a number of decent sites to explore.

Tagbao Island

Off the northwest point of Miniloc, this tiny island is also known locally as Tres Marias in reference to the three reefs that lie between the two islands. As it’s shallow here, snorkeling is good and you can expect to see lots of reef fish, colourful corals and painted crayfish.

Biet Point

This site is on the southern tip of the island and ranges from 13-21m. There are plenty of lettuce corals and sponges. You’ll encounter jacks, barracuda, squid, cuttlefish and angelfish. The site is very sheltered, so it’s a good all year round spot to explore.

Twin Rocks

On the north side of the island, this site again slopes from 13-21m and has a sandy bottom. It is charactarised by a profusion of table corals, sea whips and sponges. You will see small stingray and angelfish here.

Matinloc Island

This island is situated west of El Nido and has some interesting dives on the island itself and the surrounds.

Banayan Point

Situated on the southern tip of the island, this a great site to see pelagics. Currents can be strong, bringing with them tuna, jacks and mackerel. Don’t be so busy viewing the fish that you miss the coral encrusted rocks.

Bikanayos Rock

Also known as Picanayas, on the western side of the island, the site has some large boulders that whitetip sharks frequent. Pelagics can often be seen here as well.

Inbogal Point

Just to the southwest of Bikanayos, this site has some impressive gorgonians and green corals on a slope to 35m. Jacks, tuna and mackerel are common and it is home to a unique species of angelfish (Pomacanthus annularis). Only here and at Tres Marias can this fish be found.

Coron Bay

With a region of outstanding beauty and wildlife, Coron Bay is a tropical dream come true. Limestone cliffs and tiny isolated beach coves are spectacular. Walls of coral explode with color and life while, above, monkeys, parakeets and other animals frolic and flit in the dense foliage. Tropical magic is in the air, the sea and the islands of Coron, a tangible presence that hints of adventure and mystery.

Situated in North Palawan, the most westernly part of the Philippines. It lies in between Busuanga and Culion Islands. There is fabulous diving all around the area, but the bay is particularly well known as having some of the best wreck diving in the world. To appreciate the region, a little history goes a long way.

On the 24th September 1944, The US Navy launched a massive air strike on a Japanese supply fleet that was anchored in Coran Bay. Debate as to whether the fleet was discovered by ariel reconnaissance – the Japanese had camouflaged the ships with trees and photos showed that the “islands” had moved – or whether Japanese radio transmissions were intercepted, still rages today. The fact of the matter was that at the end of the day’s air strike, US fighter aircraft and dive bombers claimed to have sunk 24 vessels. Some 60 years on, 12 of the wrecks have been discovered. 8 of them are close together in Coron Bay, the others are slightly further afield.

As the wrecks have remained fairly inaccessable until recently, the corals in the area are exceptional. It is worth while pointing out that planning is essential for the wreck dives and some are for the experienced only.

Tai Maru (Conception Wreck)

Tai Maru is located South of Conception village on Busuanga Island, on the outer edge of the Lusteveco Company Pearl Farm. Normally calm but fierce currents are common in the area. Novices should check the tide tables first and penetrate the wreck only with an experienced divemaster. Use the shotline for descent and a safety stop on ascent. Average Depth – 52ft/16m. Maximum Depth – 85ft/26m.

An auxiliary oil tanker of the Imperial Japanese Navy Combined Fleet in the World War II, she is 550ft/168m long and is 10,045 gross tons, sits almost level, with a slight list to port, pointing 330 degrees, with a bow broken off in 75ft/26m of water. The main deck is at 52ft/16m. It is well covered with good corals, particularly large lettuce corals, sponges and shoals of fish including fusiliers, snappers and batfish, plus the ubiquitous lion and scorpion fish.

Akitsushima

The Akitsushima is located between Lajo Island and Manglet Island, south of Conception village on Busuanga Island. Average Depth – 92ft/28m. Maximum Depth – 125ft/38m.

One of the few true warships among the Coron wrecks (the others were mostly auxiliary vessels), the Akitsushima, was a flying boat tender. The wreck is 487ft/148m long, 4650 gross tons, and lies on its port side pointing 290 degrees in 125ft/38m of water with the starboard side hull at 65ft/20m. The arms of the stern crane used to load and unload the flying boat lies broken to port in 112ft/34m. The main deck is split between this crane and the funnel. There is no sign of the flying boat. This is an advanced dive due to the depth. The ship can be penetrated with care, but is also good for fish life. Large groupers lurk in the hull and shoals of barracuda, tuna and snapper are found along it.

Olympia Maru

Located Between the Northern end of Lusong Island and Tangat Island. Average Depth – 62ft/19m. Maximum Depth – 80ft/25m. This Japanese Freighter is 450ft/137m long, and 5,617 gross tons, lies on its starboard side pointing 50 degrees in 80ft/25m of water. The portside hull is at a shallower portion, 40ft/12m.

The portside hull has many large lettuce corals, hydroids, black corals, brown finger sponges with Alabaster Sea Cucumbers wrapped around them, white sponges and sea anemones with clown fish. The fish life includes shoals of small fusiliers, batfish, large groupers, golden rabbitfish, damselfish and pairs of whitecheek monocle bream.

Kogyo Maru

Located East of the Southeast corner of Lusong Island, south of the Olympia Maru. Average Depth – 92ft/28m. Maximum Depth – 110ft/34m.

A Japanese freighter, 520ft/158m and 6,352 gross tons-lies on its starboard side pointing 230 degrees in 110 ft/34m of water. The portside hull is at 22 meters (72 feet). In the large cargo room you can still see loaded construction materials, mixer and even bulldozer. On the deck anti-aircraft weapons can still be seen. On the port side, there are many corals and abundant fish life. Many groupers live around the wreck.

Gunboat at Lusong Island

This is located at the southern end of Lusong Island, the stern breaks the surface at low tide. Average Depth – 6 meters (20 feet). Maximum Depth – 10 meters (33 feet).

A shallow wreck, lying from the surface to 10 meters (33 feet), this is equally good for snorkeling and wreck photography, and is often used for relaxation between main dives. The wreck has been salvaged, and the entire top is gone. It is nicely covered with sponges and soft corals, and has many copperband butterflyfish, six-banded angelfish, and pufferfish of all sizes, batfish and various sea cucumbers.

Irako

Located Southeast of Lusong Island, south of the Kogyo Maru.

			Average Depth – 35 meters (115 feet). Maximum Depth – 42 meters (138 feet).

The Irako is a Japanese refrigerated provision ship, 147 meters (482 feet) long, 9,570 gross tons. The wreck is almost upright, listing about 10 degrees to port in 42 meters (138 feet) of water pointing 260 degrees. The main deck is at 34 meters (112 feet). Penetration represents an advanced dive due to the depth, but the superstructure is interesting, with soft corals and sponges. Large groupers hover inside the wreck, while lionfish, scorpionfish, shoals of barracuda, batfish and snappers are outside.

Mamya Maru

Located West of the northwest side of Tangat Island.

			Average Depth – 25 meters (80 feet). Maximum Depth – 34 meters (112 feet).

This 160 meters (525 feet) Japanese freighter lies on its starboard side in 34 meters (112 feet) of water. The portside hull is at 24 meters (78 feet). The large holds are easy to penetrate and contain construction materials. The port side has good stony and soft corals and a variety of fish life, sponges and anemones with clownish. Large grouper, lionfish and surgeonfish abound in the wreck with shoals of barracuda, snappers, batfish, sweepers and fusiliers around it.

Tangat Wreck (A191)

Located West of the southwest end of Tangat Island.

			Average Depth – 24 meters (80 feet). Maximum Depth – 30 meters (100 feet).

A Japanese freighter 122 meters (400 ft) long, 5,000 gross tons, it sits almost upright with perhaps a 15 degree list to port, pointing 170 degrees in 30 meters (100 feet) of water; the main deck is at 18-24 meters (60-80 feet). The site provides a good introduction to wreck diving for novices, with easy penetration of the cargo holds and a good variety of fish lives. There are several large puffer fish, lots of large lionfish and scorpion fish, a lone bump head parrotfish, shoals of batfish, snappers and sweepers, six-banded angelfish and innumerable sponges. In good visibility, this is an excellent wreck for photographers.

East Tangat Wreck

Located close to southwest side of Tangat Island.

			Average Depth – 10 meters (33 feet). Maximum Depth – 22 meters (72 feet).

Believed to be a tugboat or an anti-submarine craft, 40 meters (130 feet) long, 500 gross tons, it lies to its starboard down a sandy slope, with the stern at 22 meters (72 feet) and the top of the bow at 3 meters (10 feet), pointing 320 degrees. The water is mostly shallow enough for snorkellers.

There are no corals on the wreck, but there is some large lettuce coral beside it. There are small angelfish, buterflyfish – particularly copperband butterflyfish – and white sponges.

Kyokuzan Maru

Located Close to Club Paradise Resort which is located on Dimakya Island.

			Average Depth – 30 meters (100 feet). Maximum Depth – 43 meters (131 feet).

A Japanese freighter, 152 meters (500 feet) long, 6,492 gross tons, sits almost upright with a 15 degrees list to starboard, pointing 160 degrees in 43 meters (131 feet) of water. The main deck slopes from 22 meters (72 feet) to 28 meters (92 feet). The wreck is almost intact and can easily be penetrated, with cars and trucks in the hold.

Nanshin Maru

Located at the East Side of Malajon Island, called Black Island because of its black rocks. The wreck is just off the beach in front of a stranded vessel on the shore. Average Depth – 20 meters (56 feet). Maximum Depth – 32 meters (104 feet).

This is a 45-meter (150 feet) coastal vessel. It sits upright but down the sandy slope from the shore, with the bow bottoming at 32 meters (104 feet) and the stern bottoming at 20 meters (65 feet). There are many large scorpionfish and lionfish on the superstructure, small shoals of batfish, large shoals of sweepers, snappers, fusiliers and groupers, trumpetfish, six-banded angelfish and emperor angelfish. The hull has lots of sponges and hydroids.

Morazan Maru

A Japanese freighter sitting upright with a length of approximately 140 meters near Coron Bay, a very good dive spot with a variety of marine lives. Large shoals of banana fish, giant bat fish and giant pufferfish, especially around the mast, bow and stern. Easy penetration at the cargo rooms. Maximum depth is around 28-30 meters, deck-level is around 18-24 meters.

Moalboal is foremost known as a place of great diving. The sleepy town lies on the west coast of Cebu, about 92 km south of Cebu City. You can cover the distance in about 2 1/2 hours by car or bus. Panagsama Beach is the place you want to go, and it’s about 4 km from the town center. Here in Panagsama, the mixture of expatriates and visiting divers from all over the world living together with the friendly and unspoiled Filipino residents of Moalboal creates quite a unique community.

When to dive.

Peak diving months are November and December, although diving season is from November to May. In July and August, when most of the country endures the monsoon rains, visibility around Moalboal still averages 27 to 33 meters( 80 to 100 feet). The waters are calmest from April to June.

Where to dive.

Tuble, Tongo Point, White Beach, Badian Island, Ronda Bay Marine Park and others:

These impressive divespots are home to an extraordinary array of coral, ferns, anemones, sponges and a swarming host of brightly colored fish. Groupers, turtles and sea snakes are among the common encountered residents. All dives are superb wall dives, with some small caverns and swim throughs, an interesting underwater topography as well as the most colorful reef creatures imaginable. And all dive spots can be reached with a short banca-ride of only 10-20 minutes.

Pescador Island:

It is famous for its beautiful, largely untouched marine life. The small island with rocky cliffs is fringed by a shallow reef 3-10m wide, then spectacular drop-offs plunge away to depths of 40m plus. The cliff faces are a mass of caverns and overhangs, the most dramatic of which is the majestic Pescador Cathedral, a large underwater cavern reached by a 15m wide funnel and descending to 35m. Most divers remark on the intimacy of the Pescador experience, which presents a constant spectacle of action and colors. Divers are often surrounded by schools of pelagics, encounters with white tip sharks are common and even hammerhead sharks appear on occasion. At shallower depths you find beautiful coral gardens.

Sunken Island:

A spectacular dive, for experienced divers only. It’s actually an underwater pinnacle, with the summit about 25m below the surface. You have to drop through 25m of open blue water and mostly strong currents to reach the top of this underwater mountain. Underwater photographers love to shoot pictures from the big school of lion fish, often 20 in one place and reaching substantial sizes. Also you find frogfish and spanish dancers in this area. And, of course, big pelagics: great school of jacks and tuna, barracuda, grouper and snapper, schools of blue triggerfish and mackerel, as well as the occasional manta ray or shark.

Malapascua in Cebu is known as one of the best shark diving locations in the world. One reason is because Malapascua is one of the least spoilt tourist spots in the Philippines. It is located only 8 km off the north coast of Cebu. It has a blindingly white bounty beach, which is one of the best in the Philippines. Tourism is still relatively new in Malapascua and the island has a handful of resorts and a couple of dive operators.

Some of the sharks seen here include White Tips, Black Tips, Bamboo, Nurse, Cat, Hammerheads and the magnificent Thresher Shark. Malapascua’s Monad Shoal is known as the only place in the world where thresher sharks can be closely observed on a daily basis.

When to dive.

Malapascua can go for months in rainy season with very little rain. As Malapascua is away from the mountains, they experience much less rainfall than Cebu City and are rarely affected by typhoons, which tend to pass near to Luzon in the north of the Philippines. They lose very few days diving out of every year. There is almost always a protected area on the island that you can dive.

However, it is very difficult for us to say how the weather will be at a certain time of year and of course the weather is hard to predict far in advance. The few storms we have are spread out fairly evenly through the year with a few more in November and December. This can change from year to year.

So when should you come?

This very much depends on the kind of holiday you want and the marine life you want to see. Our personal favorite time to dive here is September. There is a good chance of mantas, and there are usually many thresher sharks. The weather is generally good, and there are not many tourists. This means fewer divers in the water, fewer people on the beach, and faster service in the restaurants.

A few points to think about:

High season (December to April) means less chance of rain, but also more people and higher prices. Hottest time is from March – May. If you want to meet lots of people and have a livelier social life this is the best time.

We get mild typhoons year round, but more so in low season (Jul-Dec). However, they do not usually hit us hard and we can almost always dive. It is hard to predict year to year. It can go 1-2 months with barely a day of rain.

Water temperature varies from 27-30 degrees for most of the year. From December – February it is 24-26 degrees.

While thresher sharks are seen all year round, sightings are more frequent from March-December. Manta rays used to be seasonal (July-November), but now are seen year round. Hammerheads are seen December-March. However, these are only tendencies and can change from year to year

Where to dive.

North Point: The rock formation and small canyons on the northern part of Malapascua are covered with beautiful hard and soft corals. At this site a wide variety of reef fish, different kinds of rays, nudibranchs, cuttlefish and some huge crabs can be found. This place is also known for its beautiful night dive possibilities (max depth 69ft/23m).

Gato Island: The name of the Island was derived from the Spanish term “Gato” meaning cat. This is because the Island is shaped like a sitting cat. The Island is a protected marine sanctuary. It has become famous as a breeding place for the “black & white banded” sea snakes. The Island has spectacular caves & rock formations, and steep walls and rocks are covered by beautifully coloured gorgonian sea fans. On the different dive spots around the Island you can find lots of nudibranchs as well as sea horses, shells, shrimps, sea snakes, scorpion fish, frogfish, big cuttlefish, stingrays, whitetip sharks, reef sharks, bamboo sharks, schools of squids, tuna and snappers. It is an underwater haven for macro photographers. Besides 3 underwater caves there is a tunnel system, which runs under the northern part of the Island starting at 15ft/5m with a large exit at 42ft/14m. It contains all kinds of interesting sea life like lobsters, crabs and even sleeping whitetips.

Monad Shoal: This dive spot is big sunken Island rising up from the ocean floor. The flat reef top is around 45ft/15m and the steep drop off is going down to approximately 600ft/200m. It has spectacular overhangs and walls, disappearing into the endless deep blue ocean. Big schools of tuna, jacks and barracudas can be seen here. But one of the special events in this area is the close encounter with the breathtaking thresher sharks that circle in front of you acting like cats with their long tails waving around. Other highlights are the Manta Rays you can see from May until January. Another comparable shoal South of Monad although much smaller is Kimot.

Calanggaman Island: On your way to this island the boat is often escorted by shoals of dolphins. It is a little paradise Island with only few inhabitants, which makes a perfect stop between two dives. It is also a perfect place for non-divers who can just stroll around, explore or sunbathe. Apart from this Island there are two nearby shoals with similar profiles: Ormoc and Nunez Shoal. All sites have shallow reef tops at 30ft/10m leading to drop-off, descending to more than 600ft/200m, caves and overhangs with nice sponges, corals and gorgonians all varieties of reef fish, eagle rays, sharks and occasional turtle. Visibility can reach 100ft/30m.

Dona Marilyn Wreck: This is a big Manila/Cebu ferry that went down 1984 in a typhoon and is known as the most beautiful wreck in the Visayas. It is a 300ft/100m long ferry, lying on its portside and it can be entered safe in some areas. The wreck is partly overgrown with hard and beautiful colored soft corals. Scorpionfish, Lionfish and other tropical fish call this home with black spotted stingrays to be found.

Don Macario Wreck: This 90ft/30m long cargo vessel was sunk by a typhoon and is now resting upside down with corals growing on and around it. It is a good wreck for novices. Point of interest angel and butterfly fish, nudibranchs, scorpionfish, sea snakes etc. (max depth 57ft/19m)

Chocolate Island: A little rocky island between Malapascua and the north point of Cebu mainland. Along its gently sloping sides you can find coral heads and beautiful soft corals. There are many small reef fish and occasionally eagle rays (max depth 54ft/18m).

Tapilon Japanese Wreck: This is a heavily torpedoed World War II Cargo vessel broken into 3 major pieces and is resting in a depth between 60ft/20m to 90ft/30m with lots of wreck debris scattered all around. It is possible to see tiles on the wreck wall, steel cable, ladders and more, also lot of moray eels, scorpion fish, flatworms and occasional huge frogfish.

Pioneer Japanese Wreck: This is a surprisingly intact Japanese World War II vessel about 180ft/60m long is standing up right with the bow bottoming at 162ft/54m and the stern bottoming at around 120ft/40m. The wreck is overgrown with beautiful corals and even the propeller and anchors are still there. The wreck has an excellent fish life including massive scorpion fish, eagle rays, large groupers and shoals of barracuda, tuna and snappers. This is a very spooky but excellent wreck dive and strictly limited to experienced and qualified divers only.

Marapipi: A real frontiers dive destination to the reefs around this beautiful volcanic island. This dive trip is offered as a little overnight safari, Very good corals and all kinds of reef fish. On the coral rubble sloping, blacktip, reef sharks are common. An occasional manta and eagle rays are present. Dolphins are also around this island.

Capitancillo Islet: This is a six-hectare, low, flat coralline islet, which is located between Cebu and Leyte. The Islet offers excellent opportunities especially at the deeper portions for it exhibits a dense population of pelagic such as jacks and tuna. A rare black coral formation is also present.
