Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding

Kite Boarding is a fast growing and dynamic new sport, which is gaining lots of publicity - because it is so extreme. It is not wind surfing, it is not wakeboarding, it is not surfing and it is not kite flying. Kite Surfing is the fusion of these disciplines with other influences to create the wildest new water sport for years.

Kiteboarding, also known as fly surfing or kitesurfing, involves using a to pull a rider through the water on a small kiteboard.

What is it.

A kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel himself and the board across the water. However, this simplicity also makes kiteboarding challenging. A kiteboarder's body is the only connection between the kite and the board. The kite is piloted in the sky while the board is steered on the water.

The sport is still in its infancy, but is rapidly growing in popularity. In 2006, the number of kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 200,000.

The sport is becoming safer due to innovations in kite design, safety release systems, and instruction.  Many riding styles have evolved to suit different types of riders and conditions, such as wake style, wave riding, freestyle, jumping, and cruising.

How  do I get started.

For beginners, you can either  first take a discover course.  Here, you’ll be able to savor a quick taste of what kiteboarding is all about by trying it out for just two hours.  Or you undergo lessons with certified IKO ( International Kiteboarding Organization) Instructors.

Where can I do this.

Voted the top Kiteboarding spot in Asia, Boracay has got to be the perfect place to learn to kiteboard, and to continue kiteboarding for beginners through to pro kiteboarders. The bay is stunning. Surrounded by dense palm trees, the water is turquoise, warm, flat and chest deep across the entire bay. As you near the fringing reef, chop appears, and if you really want to, you can pick your way through the reef to the waves on the outside (not for the faint hearted).

The wind blows cross-on shore, giving two mile long reaches inside the bay. Lighter in the mornings and evenings, the wind really blows from late morning through until late afternoon. Beginners and improvers can use each end of the day to practice in ideal conditions.

When can I go.

From November til April, kiteboarding is located in Bulabog Beach and from May till October, it is based in the White Beach of the Boracay Island.
