Gamefishing

Gamefishing

Gamefishing/ Sport fishing

Sport fishing and game fishing are often used interchangeably.  They both describe recreational fishing where the primary reward is the challenge is more on the finding and catching the fish rather than the culinary or financial value of the fish's flesh.

Why the Philippines.

Aside from being an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, the Phillipines also lies along the pelagic route of some of the world's most sought after gamefishes. This makes it truly one of sportfishing's last great frontiers. The Philippines’ warm waters, incorporating almost 2,000,000 sq km (772,200 sq miles) of fishing grounds, rank 12th in worldwide fish production. These grounds are inhabited by some 2,400 fish species, including many game fish such as giant tuna, tanguingue, king mackerel, great barracuda, swordfish and marlin.

When can I do this.

Game fishing is usually best from December to August.  However, do take note that this also depends on the location as they have different seasons.

Where can I do this.

With countless islands, there are several hotspots for gamefishing.  Among the notable ones are:

Mactan Island, Cebu

Despite the pressures of commercial fishing on local stocks, the Cebu area can still provide satisfying, and sometimes downright adventurous, fishing.  However, present gamefishers presently experience a 50% chance of catching a fish.

Local fishes include: Trevally (Mamsa), Spanish Mackerel (Tanguigue), varieties of Tuna (including, Bonito, Yellow Fin, Bigeye, Dogtooth,) Barracuda, Dorado & Wahoo. Billfish are less plentiful but include Sailfish, Marlin, Spearfish & Broadbill Swordfish. Reef fishing, mainly at night, can produce varieties of Grouper, Coral trout, Wrasse, Parrotfish & many other species. Fishing for Squid at night can be very productive.

A 25 foot Australian built Kevlacat catamaran, the Blue Sky is the perfect "pocket fisherman" for small groups (up to 4) in these waters. It's twin Suzuki 140 h.p. 4-stroke outboards provide the power for impressive top speeds and cruising of about 18-20 knots depending on conditions while consuming a miserly 50-60 liters per hour.

Calatagan, Batangas

The nearest to the metropolitan.  It only takes a few  hours to get here. Local fishes include: Giant Trevally & African Pompano (Garapeche)

Camiguin Island, Cagayan

Game fishing is best from December to August.  Camiguin Island is blessed with the availability of local big-game fishing opportunities. Giant Trevally (Mamsa), Barracuda, and Wahoo (Tanigue) are found year-round. Sailfish can be spotted from March to June and Tuna from July to October.

Davao

Davao fishing charters specialize in off-shore fishing for pelagic tuna, billfish, wahoo, dorado and king mackerels.

Subic, Zambales

Hard-core gamefishers dock their yachts here.  Besides the great wreck diving available here, it is also has fishes that include: - Giant Trevally, Sailfish, Wahoo, King  Mackerel,  & Barracuda

October to June is the season here.

Lake Lumot, Caliraya, Laguna and Pantabangan Lake, Nueva Ecija

Home to Largemouth bass fishing.  Freshwater fishing here is available all year round.

Siargao Islands, Surigao

Siargao is not just home to the famous Cloud 9 wave.

Marlins, tuna, groupers, crabs … even squids, rays and octopuses are abundant here. Many who have tried game-fishing and spear-fishing were not disappointed by the bountiful seas of Siargao. Game-fishing competitions are held every August along the city's coastal waters.

Palaui Islands/ Sta Ana, Cagayan de Oro

The first and oldest Fishing club in the Philippines is located here.  And the club maintains the Don Andres Soriano Sportfishing Camp inside the Philippine Navy headquarters in Barangay San Vicente, Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

The fishing camp serves as the take-off point for anglers traveling to Susay Rock, about two to three hours away by motorized banca.  Anglers intending to try out the fishing grounds of Camiguin Island can also use the fishing camp as their base although the traveling time to Camiguin island will take about four hours.
