Years of wall climbing, mountain climbing, dragonboat rowing, jogging, kayak marathon and all other trainings…none of it prepared me for the monster that is Mt. Mayon summit climb! The kickass volcano kicked my ass!

Maybe I was a bit out of shape, or signs of old age perhaps? It took every ounce of energy, will power and faith in my entire being to reach the summit.

Staying at camp 2 was an absolute pleasure. It was freezing cold, just the way I like it. Since we got to camp 2 early, I was able to enjoy a nap and the amazing view! No amount of money or material wealth can ever match this experience.

At 3 in the morning, we started our climb to the summit. There were countless times when I had thought of an accident. The terrain was treacherous and every step should be a calculated move because your life literally depends on it!

It was a constant debate in my mind every 30 minutes on whether or not I should turn back or soldier on…”Ayaw ko na, mamamatay ako dito”, “Sige na nga tapusin ko na, sayang naman”. It really was a test of character and will power.

The grueling experience still seems so surreal.

My battle scars were 1 very small splinter, burnt skin all over, scratches from twigs and plants and an aching body. Was it worth it? I argued with myself countless times but the answer is a resounding – YES. It is quite an achievement to be one of the few to reach the summit since 2001.

Would I do it again? I’m not sure. But this is one experience that I will remember for the rest of my life for sure.

I’m happy to be back. I’m happy to be alive.

I heard about this, months before when we met up with my mountaineer canyoning guide in Cebu. At first it appealed only to adrenalin junkies but it has become more and more popular. I already wrote about this in my previous post about Sagada. I’m not really a big fan of caves. The darkness coupled with having to squeeze my way through very narrow openings makes me feel claustrophobic. I chose this as my #3 because of its distinct variation from the other caves that I have been to.

We entered the cave right after we had our lunch and got out at about 10pm. I like this cave exploration for the level of difficulty and the grand and well-preserved cave formations. The locals did a great job in maintaining its natural beauty.

After getting over the initial fear of the dark, the claustrophobia and the constant thought of the possibility of falling over the high cave cliffs, you’ll find that t is quite magnificent.

It was the Valentine’s week and as we almost always do, we decided to go out of town to avoid the Valentine’s day craziness of the metro.

We went around Surigao and Agusan and hopped from one destination to another. We saved the best for last though. The last in our list was game fishing in Siargao! I was anxious the night before. There was a storm in Siargao and we weren’t sure if we could go out fishing the next morning. Our boat captain told us that the waves were enormous. I tried not to keep my hopes high.

The next morning, our captain gave us a GO! Although it was sunny, the water was nevertheless very choppy. It was an amazing boat ride through waves of mammoth proportions. It is hard to envision it here in my photos and even on the videos that I took.

We had to wait 30 minutes in between hits. Some might find it boring. We, on the other hand, almost did not notice the long wait. We caught several big ones. The anticipation and excitement was intoxicating. Man they sure can give a fight!

We caught too much for the two of us so we had one big fish cooked and ate it for our late lunch and sold the rest to the resort owner.

I wish I could have brought a sharp sushi knife, kikoman, ginger, lime and wasabi. I’ll bring them in February. We loved it there so much that we decided to spend valentine’s week again in the island. Hoping to catch more then!!

Some planes had enclosures at the front but mine was completely open. There was a short runway then we were off! It shook me out a bit at the beginning. Fortunately Alex, my designated pilot guide, was a very relaxed and chatty guy. It took no time before I was able to relax and get used to the feeling of riding a bicycle in mid air. I even tried my hand at driving the plane!

Where to Go:

Cagsawa Ruins

Despite its tragic past, Cagsawa Ruins continues to invite tourists to visit the place because of its spectacular view of the Mayon Volcano where everyone can see it with their naked eyes. The rich diversity of history, place and the people could be seen through the number of tourists that came over to from different part of the world. There, tourists can buy handicrafts, souvenir shirts and meet hospitable photographers who can direct you for picture-perfect shots.

Ligῆon Hill

Standing 156 meter (511 feet) tall, this is another beautiful spot in the Bicol Region. Having Mayon Volcano behind it and the Albay Parks and Wildlife just beside it, and a 360 degree view of the city when on top of it.  A new and exciting adventure activity here is the off- road adventure through the Lava valley.

Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave

Have you ever imagined a cave with a disco place? Hoyop-hoyopan Cave was said to be developed during the time of the Marcos’s and that the disco floor was built in honour to the First Lady Imelda Marcos. Of the three caves in Camalig, Albay, Hoyop hoyopan is the most popular and accessible for the visitors. The cave is a three-storey cave and one would have to spend 11 hours to be able to completely explore the cave.

Mount Mayon Summit Climb

There are 2 camps when travelling up to the summit of Mount Mayon.  Camp 1 is around 2 hours away and lies at the foot of the slope of the mountain.  Camp 2 is situated beside a dry waterfall bed or popularly known as the “gulley” or “water source”, climbers reach this camp site after a four to five hour long trek and climb from the base camp.  Camp 2 also offers spectacular view of the city of Legazpi and the ocean.

From Camp 2, there would be a 5 to 7 hours hard trek to reach the crater of Mount Mayon.  Trekkers would be passing straight up the gulley towards the summit.  This part of the leg is definitely not for the weak as this is best recommended for intermediate or advanced climbers.  Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with an unbelievable view of the Legaspi City and the islands beside it.

Embarcadero de Legazpi

One of the newest spot in the Legaspi City, the Embarcadero de Legazpi takes pride of its state of the art facilities from its commercial hubs, entertainment centers, and cafe’s and shops, restaurants, bowling alleys, arcades and a whole lot more. The mall offers not just simple shopping and indoor activities but it has also offers extreme sports such as go karting, zip line, rappelling, jet ski and segway PT. The cold breeze from the sea, the lights from the towers of the mall and the undeniably fun activities at Embarcadero is a great stop for tourists.

Bicol Cuisines:

Bicolano’s are famous for using coconut cream “gata” and chilli “sili” in their regular menu. Known for the popular Bicol Express, Bicol also offers a cuisine that is really Bicolano, the Laing or “pinangat” which is made from taro leaves, filled with shredded taro leaves and bits of meat and lots of chillies to taste, and the best tasting Kinunot which is made from stringray meat and malunggay leaves. These three Bicol cuisines are cooked and simmered steady in coconut cream and chillies.  Famous restaurants include: Sibiu- sibid Restaurant and the Waway’s Restaurant.
